The Royal Mail boss who approved a multi-million pound pay deal for its new chief executive earned £85,000 last year for attending just 22 official meetings.

Orna Ni-Chionna sits on the Royal Mail board and is chairman of the remuneration committee that signed off a near £6million deal for chief executive Rico Back before he took charge in June.

She also approved Mr Back’s £640,000- a-year salary, which is 17 per cent higher than that of his predecessor Dame Moya Greene and could reach £2.7million through bonuses and other awards.

With Royal Mail facing a fierce backlash over fat cat pay, Miss Ni-Chionna looks set to be quizzed by MPs over Mr Back’s lavish awards. The 64-year-old lives in Switzerland and will not relocate to UK.

Her pay deal has also raised eyebrows amid claims she works one day a month. Miss Ni-Chionna, 62, married to ex-City watchdog chief Adair Turner, also has jobs at Burberry, Saga, Eden McCallum and the National Trust. The firm’s annual report showed she attended eight board meetings last year and 14 committee meetings, including five to discuss pay.

The full extent of Mr Back’s pay package was revealed by the Daily Mail on Thursday ahead of the firm’s AGM. Investors voted against Mr Back’s pay deal.

Labour MP Peter Kyle said: ‘I think there is every chance that Royal Mail will be called to Parliament to answer the difficult questions which have been posed by the Daily Mail’s journalism.’

Asked if that would include Miss Ni-Chionna, he said: ‘Yes.’

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: ‘Royal Mail is Orna’s single biggest ongoing commitment. She sits on all our board committees, is our senior independent director and chairs the remuneration committee. She dedicates significantly more time to her role than would be expected of non-executive directors in less complex, less challenging companies. We are pleased to note her re-election at our AGM.’

Referring to the 22 meetings listed in the annual report, a Royal Mail spokesman added: ‘Those are the official meetings of the Board and the Board Committees that we disclose. Orna will have attended many, many more meetings and engagements during the year as part of her role.’

it just gets better , what work do these people actually do for there money and I cant believe they all have another 3-4 jobs on top

, 1 day a month for £85 k its unreal

, give them a month on delivery that should open there eyes and they wouldn't have the energy to do any other jobs .

How about they go out on delivery and then spend the afternoon in the stocks for people to lob all sorts at them. I hate these bastards who are a cancer in our society. They are all the same and preach to everybody about value for money and how workers need to do more in these tough times and yet they are just scum who take, take, take and see nothing wrong in it. Their parents must be so proud of them.

yes and we all want to be thankful to these people that we have a job ,

Who pays for this US ALL the workers don't give them a sausage of your time these people make you lapse to earn these payouts for a word they are but parasites upon the working man and woman!

Miss Chionna may have been reelected this year but I very much doubt she will hold onto her job at next year's AGM.
