Northern Ireland postal worker appears in dock charged with stealing packages

A postal worker accused of stealing mail appeared at court in Co Antrim yesterday.

Alan Pattison (54), with an address at Thomas Street, Ballymena, faces three charges.

He is accused of the theft of mail of an unknown value on November 27 last year.

On the same date he is charged with interfering with mail. The third charge also relates to alleged interference with mail.

That charge alleges the defendant, on dates between May 1 and November 28, 2017, "while being a person engaged in the business of a postal operator, contrary to your duty and without reasonable excuse, intentionally delayed postal packets in the course of their transmission by post".

The defendant appeared in the dock and a police officer said she believed she could connect him to the charges.

Defence barrister Neil Moore said he would like some time to consider the papers in the case.

Deputy District Judge Paul Conway asked if the allegations involved a "breach of trust" and Mr Moore said that was correct.

No further details were given in court and the defendant was released on bail.

The case was adjourned until July 26.
