Brigg : Family's anger as pet dog Jaydee ran out of the house and is killed after being hit by Royal Mail van

The six-stone staffie/boxer cross was hit by a Royal Mail van on Woodbine Avenue in Brigg on Tuesday morning.

A family whose pet dog died after being hit by a Royal Mail post van have expressed their anger.

The incident took place on Woodbine Avenue in Brigg at 8.30am on Tuesday morning, when Sammy Avison’s niece answered the door to a friend and Jaydee, the family dog, ran out of the house.

Sammy went straight outside to grab the dog, who took a few steps back onto the road.

She said she then saw a Royal Mail van, with the male driver approaching at what appeared to be over the 20mph limit, before hitting the dog while going over a speed bump.

Sammy said: "I had to step backwards or he would have hit me as well. He did not attempt to brake and he ran over Jaydee with his front and back wheel.

Sammy is disgusted after the Royal Mail driver sped off following the collision

"She died instantly and he just drove off. He did not stop at all and he knew full well what he had done. Jaydee was a six-stone staffie crossed with a boxer. My husband heard the collision from inside the house."

Sammy went to the Royal Mail sorting office in Brigg to speak to someone about the issue and said on the following day, two Royal Mail employees visited her and have taken a statement.

Sammy said: "I asked them what the outcome will be and they said they had no idea as they have never had to deal with something this disgusting and disturbing.

"I just think it’s disgusting that someone who works for the Royal Mail, a civil servant, would do something like this.

"We live on a busy route where kids go to school and he was going at that speed – it could have easily been a child who he hit. He didn’t even stop, he showed no remorse."

Sammy posted the details on a Brigg Facebook page and said she received a lot of messages back from people.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We are sorry to hear about this incident and are currently investigating with our colleagues in Brigg."

How do they know the van was exceeding the speed limit?
How do they know the driver "knew exactly what he had done"? If he was going over a speed bump at the time he ran the dog over.
I deliver to numerous farms with sheepdogs running free and it's impossible to see them when they're right next to or in front of the van (trying to round it up)

Sorry but the dog should have not been allowed to run out the house.Also the speed limit in built up areas is 30 mph no such thing as 20mph speed limit.If driver was doing under 30 he done nothing wrong

The 20mph speed limits are not advisory. They are legally enforceable speed limits just like 30mph speed limits.

Indeed here are the enforcement signs for that particular 20mph zone

However, I have been advised that this may not have been a RM vehicle but a Red Van misidentified as RM. Apparently, the local DO has not found any damaged vans. But this is speculation and not official information, indeed it may be inaccurate.

Hmm maybe I stand corrected.In My town the Police admit they can’t enforce it and have to rely on the drivers self enforcing it.

So it alright for dog's to run amok around a 20 mph area these people need to take responsibility for their pets and feral offspring and themselves not blame others!

I flattened a question with a 600. Never felt a thing but felt like crap even though this dog had also ran out of its garden where family were having a loss up. I only new at the next set of lights when 3 pissed up relations of the family got to me. THEY were lucky that T19 didn't go over them for the s**t I got from them.
