Snaresbrook resident fuming after paying postal fees to collect Conservative campaign literature

A Snaresbrook resident is furious after paying fees to receive undelivered post which turned out to be Conservative campaign literature.

After paying the fees online, they each received white envelopes which they discovered contained leaflets promoting Conservative candidates for Wanstead Village: Scott Wilding, Michelle Dunn and Steve Wilks.

“I was annoyed I had to pay for a letter of junk mail,” said Miles, 33.

“It’s not the money. It’s just the point of having to pay for canvassing material.

He added: “I will get my money back!”

The Recorder contacted all three Conservative candidates and none were immediately able to comment.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “In this case, the customer has been surcharged because the envelopes have not had any postage applied to them.

“The surcharge helps to cover the extra cost of handling items which have been underpaid.

“We would urge customers and businesses sending mail to ensure they always use the correct postage.”

This postal problem comes weeks after Tory canvassers in Ilford town centre were caught red faced after a printing error resulted in incomplete leaflets being put through people’s letter boxes days before May 3’s election.

The leaflets read that the candidates are “working hard to make Ward/Area Name an even better place to live”.

This is followed by a template list of the party’s achievements in the ward with the dummy text left unchanged.

A Thorold Road resident told the Recorder he came across the leaflet after it was posted through his letter box on the evening of May 1.

On May 4, rival Labour candidates Jo Blackman, Daniel Morgan-Thomas and Paul Donovan were elected as councillors for Wanstead Village.
