More than third of Boxford population signs petition to keep postman

More than a third of the population of Boxford have signed a campaign to save their village postman from being forced to move to another round.

Five-hundred villagers, and residents from surrounding villages, are fighting to keep Kevin Pike in Boxford, where he has been the village postman for eight years.

He is being forced to move because of changes by Royal Mail.

After writing to Royal Mail executives, both locally and in London, Boxford campaigner David Lamming has accused the company of writing a “weasel-worded” letter.

Royal Mail executive Andrew Smout wrote to Mr Lamming, stating: “Due to the on-going changes we are experiencing with our service, at times changes to routes are necessary. All of our staff are trained in the same way. You shouldn’t notice any change.”

But in his response to the company, Mr Lamming said: “I regret to say that your weasel-worded letter fails to address the substantial points made in the petition.

“To add ‘you shouldn’t notice any change’ is nonsense. Clearly the service will be inferior while any new postman or woman gets to the know the round.

“Not only does your letter demonstrate that any ‘commitment’ by Royal Mail to its customers is a matter of empty words, but, if you had a real commitment to your ‘dedicated’ staff, you would now take the necessary steps to ensure that one such dedicated staff member continues to serve customers in Boxford to which he is dedicated.”
