Barrow MP: Postal firms delivering drugs parcels must face tough penalties

POSTAL delivery companies should face tough penalties if they allow their services to be used by drug traffickers following an epidemic of deaths in the town, Barrow's MP has said.

John Woodcock is calling for the law to be changed to make private firms responsible for screening out parcels containing banned substances in a clampdown on dealers operating from the dark web.

His concerns are to be one of the issues discussed at a national conference convened by Mr Woodcock which is expected to be held in Westminster next month.

It is hoped MPs and council representatives from other coastal towns across the country blighted by a surge in heroin and opiate use will attend, along with senior national policing figures.

The event has already been endorsed by government policing minister Nick Hurd following a high level meeting between him and Mr Woodcock earlier this week.

Mr Woodcock said: "People are literally dying in our communities, so I think it would be a good idea to get people from towns affected like ours together so that we can discuss the issues.
