Royal Mail adds string to bow with special delivery

A LETTER from Tasmania vaguely addressed to "a brilliant violinist" has been hailed as an example of British Royal Mail diligence after finding the musician on the other side of the world.
But in a sad twist the South Hobart sender of the letter, a former violinist for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, has since passed away.

Postal workers in the UK were left puzzled after a letter from Australia turned up addressed only to: "Roy Ashby, a brilliant violinist! Living in a village close to Tamworth, England".

Rather than bin the small post pack, determined postman Peter Armitage set about finding the violinist in electoral rolls, phone directories and ringing postal colleagues in nearby counties.

Then he rang a local music shop and they knew who Mr Ashby was. He bought his sheet music and replacement strings from the store.

A surprised Mr Ashby, 60, said he couldn't believe the letter from his old violinist mate John Bussey, a former member of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, had arrived. The pair lost touch more than 30 years ago.

"When it came through the door I looked at the envelope and thought 'how the hell did they find me?," Mr Ashby said.

"It was a very nice surprise.

"The Royal Mail must be a fantastic detective agency."

Mr Ashby, who plays the violin and organ and was leader of the Scots Guard Orchestra when he was in the army, consequently made contact with Mr Bussey.

But yesterday Mr Bussey's family said the 57-year-old British ex-pat had unfortunately died last month.

Mr Bussey joined the TSO as a violinist in 1970, but had to retire six years later because of a nagging arm injury.

In 1991 he started a sheet music publishing business in Devonport before later moving to Hobart.

Yes I posted it on here but its nice to hear how it finished. :Very Happy if a little bit sad that the originator has died. :sad:
