The Soham postie has been unable to work due to his injuries

Soham postman was attacked up by a member of the public while out on his rounds.

The assault took place around 12.45pm in Broad Piece, a busy residential road.


Police say a 49-year-old man has attended a voluntary interview in connection with the incident.

Today a Royal Mail spokeswoman confirmed an employee had been hurt.

She said: "Royal Mail can confirm that a postman was assaulted by a member of the public on April 6 whilst out on delivery.

“Thankfully incidents like this are very rare, but we take these matters extremely seriously. Our hardworking postmen and women serve their communities six days a week and should be allowed to carry out their job safely.”

The extent of his injuries are not yet known and it is unclear why he was targeted.

Previous attacks on postal workers

In 2016 a Cambridgeshire postman was racially abused and told to “go back to his own country".


His attacker was sentenced to an 18-month community order which included a six month uplift for the racially aggravated element of the offence, requested by the prosecution.

Last year the Royal Mail also confirmed there are seven dog attacks on postal workers every day.

The attacks most often happened at the front door or in the garden, usually when a dog is not kept under control, according to the figures.
