The daughter of a woman hounded to death by junk-mail scams is calling for a Royal Mail investigation unit to crack down on fraudsters.

Marilyn Baldwin's mother Jessica Looke, 83, died after blowing her life-savings on bogus lottery claim frauds.

After our horrifying story about her death last week, readers inundated us with similar tales.

Now Mrs Baldwin, 52, wants safeguards to stop scammers who send out thousands of letters and threats a day.

"This isn't just junk mail but criminal gangs stealing money," she said. "Royal Mail must be making hundreds of thousands out of this evil trade.

"If a postman sees that people are getting 30 or so scam letters a day it should be reported to a special department at Royal Mail.

"Those addresses should be sent a letter with a helpline number on it offering advice."

Scammers tell victims like Jessica, who died of pneumonia last month, that they have won a big prize but then demand an "administration fee" to get at the winnings. Mrs Baldwin also wants more controls on anonymous PO box addresses.

"It's as easy to get one as taking out a video," she said.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We are constantly looking at ways to protect people from fraud."

Jessica spent Â£50,000 of savings on junk-mail scams. She was not Â£80,000 in debt when she died as reported, and she was able to keep up payments on her heating bill.

These lettes are annoying i delivery the same sort of lettes to people they take up the whole slot, all junk mail from every corner of the world, some people are so gullible.

Gordon Brown's the one they should be blaming here. He and his government should be bringing in a law to make scams like that illegal. Then RM wouldn't have to deliver the letters.

I heard that at one time , RM didn't really want these letters as they were deliberately posted from places were postage was cheap and the proportion of the postage price RM got , wasn't worth bothering with .

The other tactic with these firms was getting round the 1998 UK Data Protection act by posting from overseas . The idea is that people see a Airmail which looks "important " and the greed/gullibility kicks in .

You get the same nonsense on the internet , If I believed their claims , I'd have about 40 lap tops .There's vile sites like Red Watch hosted from the US that are untouchable .Probably pictures of some RMC members on it along with addresses , phone numbers etc .

Nice to see RM have suddenly become so "caring" about people who are not their customers according to :lfoRM does waffle about Corporate Responsibility :but it's as ever just hype & spin

.I don't think RM are suddenly going to be moralistic about the likes of Reader's Digest when there wasn't any morality to start with .

RM delivers mail, it doesn't censor or filter it.
Scams like this ARE illegal, why do you think so many come in from abroad?

I've been lucky so far, and haven't had a scam letter. Can you actually tell that it is one from the envelope?

I work in an RDC, so I rarely see the actual envelopes, as we sort the Sacks into areas. If you can tell what they are from the envelopes, then surely IB could do something about it, as they are illegal. Or am I being nieve?

the bulk delivery of these only kicks in once you have responded to an initial letter. I have one woman on my walk who is getting around 30 a day. You can see through the front door (glass) that they are all over the living room floor piled high.No manager at work is interested and the social services said when i contacted them "We cant do anything unless the owner contacts us" So there you have it no one gives a s**t

Conversely there is one on my walk who looks forward to getting them. In fact he and his wife come to the door before I knock to see what they have in today's batch. Sometimes its a whole bundle to that one address.

Takes all sorts I suppose.

Most are from oversea's so that's one clue but the best is IF IT SOUND'S TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS! OR YOU DON'T GET OUT FOR NOWT.!

Unless of course you are called Crozier or Leighton In which case you get your mail delivered for a pittance and D2D's for nothing and a big fat bonus and pension for less than nothing.

Its a crying shame that the old are gullible

But i cant see these scams going on for long

Becuase the young generation are wise to this crap

Therefore in years to come all this crap will be confined straight to the bin and these bogus companys wont bother with it.
