'Diabolical' Brentwood mail blasted as hospital appointment letter arrives three months late

A pensioner has lashed out at Brentwood's "diabolical" postal service after a letter informing her husband of a hospital appointment arrived two days after he were expected to see doctors - and three months after it was sent.

Valerie Grigg, 86, is one of a number of people who have been complaining about the poor mail service in the town over the Christmas period.

A letter sent to her 92-year-old husband Peter on October 4, detailing an appointment scheduled at Queens Hospital for January 2, did not arrive at the couple’s house in Hutton until January 4.

It was only because Mrs Grigg was aware by Christmas that they should have received an appointment letter that she chased it up and requested a follow-up.

However Christmas cards posted from New Zealand and Australia have only just arrived at their home, Mrs Grigg added.

She said: “I must have contacted Queens before Christmas to say we hadn’t received the letter.

“They sent another letter which we received.

“The appointment was due on January 2 and the letter itself was dated October 4. We received the letter on January 4.

“The post has been absolutely diabolical here.

“I sent a letter to the postmaster just before Christmas complaining about what has happened to the mail. We had been getting it every other day and then we were getting it every third day."

The delays have raised questions across town about the efficiency of the postal service – several other people have also complained about the postal service they have been receiving, with Christmas cards arriving only in the past week while others report that birthdays cards sent at the end of November still have not arrived.


A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “In some areas in and around Brentwood, there were some delays to deliveries in the run-up to Christmas as a result of bad weather and there has been an unexpectedly high level of sick absence in the office at the start of the year.

"We apologise to any customers affected by this and we are doing all we can to resume our high quality delivery service as soon as possible.
