Post office re-opens after outcry from angry customers

A temporary postmaster is running Hornsea's Cliff Road branch

A Hornsea post office has reopened after a backlash from angry customers, who complained to their MP about its closure.

The busy Cliff Road branch, in Today’s Local store, shut in November, sparking residents to complain to MP Graham Stuart.


It was another blow to the town after news of looming bank closures.

But following a public outcry, the Post Office has now re-opened the branch this week, with a temporary postmaster at the helm.

A Post Office spokesman said: “The Post Office apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused by the recent temporary closure of Hornsea Post Office following the resignation of the previous postmaster.

“We are pleased to confirm that the branch has reopened at the same location following the appointment of a temporary postmaster.

“We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services and we are delighted to restore services whilst we continue to seek a more permanent solution for the area.”

Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart, who tackled the Post Office over the closure, is relieved the branch is back in operation.

The Tory MP said it comes as £370m funding has been announced by Business Secretary Greg Clark to help protect rural Post Office branches like the one at Hornsea.

Mr Stuart said: “I am relieved to see the re-opening of Hornsea Post Office today and was pleased to support the Post Office with the search for a new postmaster.

“I also welcome the new Government funding being announced and have been assured by the Post Office that it will help to ensure the long-term future of rural post offices like the branch in Hornsea and elsewhere in my constituency.


“I know many people in Beverley and Holderness rely on Post Office services every week, and I want to see our rural post offices safeguarded well into the future.”

The Government funding announced for the Post Office will go towards helping branches to extend opening hours and cut queue times, as well as protecting rural services.
