Man in court charged with stealing 29 postboxes

Mark Crowther alleged to have stolen 29 postboxes and to have attempted to steal another four, worth around £25,000

A man appeared in court today to face charges of stealing or attempting to steal 33 post boxes worth more than £25,000.

It is alleged Mark Crowther, of Linden Avenue, Chirk, stole 29 boxes and attempted to steal another four across Wrexham, Flintshire and Shropshire, belonging to the Royal Mail.


The crimes allegedly happened over a three year period between 2012 and 2014.

In Wrexham the 37-year-old is alleged to stolen the boxes from Whitehurst, Wynnstay, Knolton Bryn, Overton Station, Forest Road, Mount Pleasant, Chirk Station, Bersham, Bryn Common, Red Hall Lane, Althrey, Ninth Avenue, Cock Bank, Llangar, Bryn Villa, Bowling Bank, Holly Bush Lane, Eglwys and Wynstay Road.

In Shropshire it is claimed Crowther stole post boxes from Haughton in Shrewsbury, Sodylt in Ellesmere, Chequer Box in Long Waste, Whitchurch,; and Llwyn Road, Park Hall, Bronygarth and the Old Racecourse in Oswestry.

In Flintshire it was alleged Crowther stole a post box from Cadole in Mold.

The alleged attempted thefts were at Forest Road, Croes, Wynnstay and Bryn Place - all in Wrexham.

During a short 10 minute hearing Crowther, dressed in dark trousers and jacket, stood to confirm his name, age and address.

Crowther indicated he was going to plead not guilty.

Prosecuting, Andrea Fitzgerald, said the value of the alleged thefts and attempted thefts added up to more than £25,000.


Andrew Holliday, acting for the defence and Ms Fitzgerald, said the case should be sent to crown court.

District Judge Gwyn Jones agreed and added: “I am sending this case to be heard at Mold Crown Court on December 8.”

Crowther was granted conditional bail.
