Postman's posting

May 6 2007

Laura Kemp, Wales on Sunday

A NORTH Wales postie is on a posting to Afghanistan to deliver mail to soldiers.

Rob Jones from Llandudno volunteered to travel to the war-torn country with 871 Postal Courier Squadron, who are all Territorial Army officers.

Warrant Officer Second Class Jones made the difficult decision to leave his wife Jane and their three children, Amy-Leigh, 15, Sofi Mai, 13, and Bryan-Eric, 11, for a six-month tour of duty.

His job involves the handling of classified and personal mail delivered to the Task Force Helmand Headquarters and supporting units based in Lashkar Gar.

Rob, 40, said: "Apart from the heat, dust and long hours, this is an experience I shall never forget and it could not be more different from home.

"It makes my job a pleasure when the soldiers are pleased to see me, especially when they return from long-range patrols and I have letters for them.

"I miss my family very much, but know this is such an important job to do, especially ensuring the troops who are based far out in the desert get their parcels and letters."

The former regular soldier, who served as a Royal Engineer, decided after 18 years of home-based TA activity it was time for service abroad.

"The experiences here are so different from delivering mail back home, especially when the Royal Air Force Chinook Helicopters land throughout the day with sacks of mail, which makes a change from the back of a transit van," he said.
