The Royal Mail is facing the threat of the first national strike since it was privatised after workers voted massively in favour of industrial action in a bitter dispute over pensions, pay and jobs.
Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) backed walkouts by 89% on a turnout of 73% of the 110,000 balloted.
It passed the threshold in the Government's controversial Trade Union Act, under which ballots need a 50% turnout for industrial action to go ahead.
The CWU believes it is a "watershed" moment for unions as well as the Royal Mail, which it has accused of following a "relentless" programme of cost-cutting to maximise short-term profits and shareholder returns.
The union accused the company of "unilaterally" closing its defined benefit, or final salary, pension scheme, with new entrants going into an "inferior" scheme which will leave them in "pensioner poverty".
The union is also in dispute over pay and issues such as delivery office closures.

The Communication Workers Union says a vote among 110,000 postal workers was overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.
Royal Mail says its pay and pension offers are industry-leading
Postal workers have delivered a vote "overwhelmingly" in favour of the first national strike at Royal Mail since its controversial privatisation four years ago.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the ballot among 110,000 staff backed walkouts by 89% on a turnout of 73%.
The result meant it met the 50% turnout threshold needed for industrial action to go ahead under controversial new Government strike legislation, the CWU said.
The union added it was to decide its strategy, including any future strike dates, at a meeting later this week but said the vote indicated a clear feeling among its members that bosses had lost trust and should step aside.
The result was announced just after financial markets had closed for the day - with the value of Royal Mails shares already down almost 17% in the year to date, partly reflecting strike concerns.
The dispute centres on the closure of Royal Mail's final salary pension scheme to new entrants and also separate rows over pay and delivery office closures.
The CWU says its list of gripes with the company are all linked to its privatisation - accusing bosses of cost-cutting and asset-stripping to satisfy shareholders.
Deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger said: "This ballot result is hugely significant and demonstrates a strength of feeling that can only be translated as a massive vote of no confidence in the managerial leadership of the Royal Mail Group and the direction that they advocate.
"Any sense of vocational spirit and working together with management has been lost in a climate of fear and insecurity.
"This massive failure in trust has created a breakdown in relationships and a toxic environment where working together to solve difficult problems has become almost impossible.
"The managerial leadership has failed and should resign or be sacked."
Royal Mail has insisted there are no grounds for industrial action.
Ahead of the ballot result, the company said it remained committed to finding a deal on pensions and pay - with offers still on the table.
"Alongside Royal Mail's proposal for the best pension scheme in the industry - and one that compares favourably to other large employers - we are making a very good offer on pay.
"Under its proposals, Royal Mail would continue to provide the best pay and terms and conditions in the industry.
"Many competitors pay around the national living wage. Royal Mail pays 45%-50% more than this."
It added: "Industrial action - or the threat of it - undermines the trust of our customers. Industrial action makes it harder for Royal Mail to pay for industry-leading terms and conditions.
The company also pointed out that a strike would be self-defeating for staff as they owned a fifth of Royal Mail shares.
Rival Parcelhero was quick to jump on Royal Mail's woes, warning any strike action could "cancel Christmas".

Royal Mail workers have overwhelmingly voted to take strike action over jobs, pay and pensions with a turnout of 73.7% - easily overcoming the 50% threshold for industrial action to be legal.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) announced on Tuesday afternoon that a ballot of 111,082 members saw 89.1% vote in favour of a national strike.
It is the first time Royal Mail workers have for industrial action since the organisation was privatised four years ago.
At the heart of the dispute is the firm’s plan to change its £9.8bn pension scheme to one that gives staff a cash lump sum, as well as moves to cut 3,000 jobs a year.
The ballot was a test of the government’s Trade Union Act which requires unions to achieve a 50% turnout threshold in strike ballots for them to be legal.
Dave Ward, the general secretary of the CWU union, said: “This is a watershed dispute, we are going to defend our members’ pensions, jobs and their pay”.
Ellie Long, a Parcelforce employee, told a press conference in Manchester that the union had run the “most effective industrial campaign ever”. She added: “In every corner of the UK our members have risen up.”
Royal Mail has insisted its reforms of the pension scheme will still give staff “by far the best in the delivery industry”, but leaving it unreformed would add hugely to costs.
Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour leadership has been under pressure to reveal whether it would back a strike if the 50% threshold was not reached.
However Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell predicted last week the party would not be put in that position. “everyone is going to vote for strikes,” he said.
And earlier today, workers on South Western Railway voted heavily in favour of striking in the dispute over the role of guards on trains.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union backed walkouts by 4-1 on a turnout of 76%, well above the 50% threshold.

it beggars belief really. It took all of 60 seconds to open an envelope, put a an X in a box and seal an envelope and drop it in a bag in the DO in the morning. They are the ones who probably moan from morning to night they are being pushed from pillar to post to deliver this and that and then can't be bothered to vote (either way).

About time to as this industry is being decimated by fat cats from Canada and beyond but I don't care where they come from with their visions of profit for themselves and doom for the rest of us time is we now have the opportunity to set the agenda. As capitalism is dying as their is no one left to screw over even the Tories have said capitalism is dying must be a collective realisation in Manchester that they are the dinosaurs and extinction is in the air for them and capitalism!
