Royal Mail said the Burnley Road operation will close 'later this financial year'

Mail bosses have insisted that customers will still be able to collect undelivered post locally after confirming plans to close the town’s delivery office.

Royal Mail said the sorting offices on Burnley Road, Bacup and at Todmorden will relocate to Rochdale “later this financial year”.

They said once the Bacup operation is closed, customers will still be able to collect post from the town’s post office ­– despite concern from a postal unions. Last October we reported that a campaign had been started to fight the planned closure of the Bacup delivery office which is a base for 21 employees.

This week the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said they were “extremely disappointed” at the latest announcement.

In a statement the union’s North West No1 Branch said: “The CWU believe the closure of the office to be detrimental to the town of Bacup and that this would remove the opportunity for jobs for local people in the future.

“Royal Mail have in the press release on Monday stated that they have sourced local pick-up points for undelivered mail. We the CWU believe this may not be the case, speaking to the outlets named.

“If no local pick-up is sourced for undelivered mail, customers will have to make a 20-mile round journey to Rochdale to collect the mail which was not delivered by post persons on their rounds.”

They added that none of the current workforce want to relocate to Rochdale and claimed the company had breached terms of its national agreement on delivery office mergers.

In a statement, Royal Mail said: “This is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business and work to increase the efficiency of its operation as well as providing delivery offices that are fit for purpose for our staff and for our customers.

“Further detailed planning is now taking place to ensure a smooth transition for our operations, our people and the service we provide to customers.


“There will be no impact on mail deliveries to customers, who will continue to be served by the same postmen and women.”

The statement added: “We have a strong track record of managing change and we work with our staff and our unions to give them the opportunity to discuss the implications in detail.

“There will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of this move.”
