THERE was traffic chaos in both directions on the B4425 in Bibury while a Royal Mail HGV attempted to reverse out of Hawkers Hill under police supervision.
Brian Skarda, who lives on Arlington Row in the village, said the articulated vehicle “attempted to enter Hawkers Hill in order to avoid the weight restriction at the Swan Bridge” on Sunday afternoon, assuming there would a “turning place at the top”.
“The driver tried to reverse out onto the main road with considerable difficulty, as a car was parked on double yellow lines at the entrance to the main road,” he said.
“Under police supervision, the driver made a number of attempts to reverse into the main road whilst traffic was held up in both directions.”
Brian said the situation was “aggravated” by temporary traffic lights in place due to workers installing a broadband fibre optic cable, “thus causing considerable tailbacks”.
Arlington Row is also the home of Peter Maddox, whose yellow car was vandalised in February, causing a nationwide media storm, as well as an increase in visitors, according to Brian.
He said the village and street are “suffering from a considerable increase in traffic, both cars and coaches, as the result of media interest in the yellow car phenomenon”.
Visitors “from all over the world” has meant the village is “getting saturated” with new people, while “illegal parking on yellow lines is causing problems for residents attempting to access their properties”.
“The volume of cars attempting to reach Arlington Row via Hawkers Hill is becoming a hazard for all concerned,” said Brian.
“Maybe this HGV driver will not attempt a ‘No access for HGV’s’ lane again,” he added.
