Boost for Cardross residents after MSP puts pressure on Royal Mail

PEOPLE living in Cardross will be able to collect undelivered items from the village's post office from the end of this month.

Currently, residents have to travel to the Royal Mail centre in Alexandria to collect their mail after the depot in Dumbarton closed last July as part of the Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of business. But Royal Mail has confirmed that the service will be available in the next few weeks.

The village's MSP, Jackie Baillie, went to Royal Mail after a local resident complained about the additional journey time at one of her advice surgeries.

Postmen and women will now leave undelivered parcels and letters requiring a signature at the post office on Main Street instead of returning them to Alexandria industrial estate.

MS Baillie said: “I am pleased that Royal Mail has listened to the concerns of my constituents in Cardross and agreed to provide a collection service in the village.

“The closure of the Dumbarton Delivery Office has affected everyone in the G82 postcode area but people in Cardross have faced the longest journeys to collect undelivered mail at Alexandria Industrial Estate.

“While unfortunately Royal Mail was unable to secure an alternative collection point in Dumbarton town centre, I am delighted that they have managed to find a solution for residents in Cardross.

"It is hoped that the new service at Cardross Post Office will be up and running in the next couple of weeks.”

Royal Mail spokeswoman, Morag Turnbull, said: “Royal Mail is pleased to confirm that customers in Cardross will be able to collect items we have been unable to deliver from Cardross Post Office from the end of June.

“There are a number of options for customers to collect parcels and mail we have been unable to deliver.

"We can now leave many of these items with a neighbour if customers are not at home when we attempt delivery.

“Customers can also nominate a dedicated neighbour to take in their parcels by filling in a form at the delivery office.

"Customers can also arrange a redelivery free of charge on a day that is convenient for them (including Saturdays), or Royal Mail can deliver the item to a different address within the same postcode area.
