RIP Union Man

The funeral of one of Aberdeen's most dedicated trade unionists will be held today.

John Gallagher, who fought in World War II, died on Remembrance Day, just weeks after celebrating his 90th birthday.

He is known for his work for the Union of Post Office Workers, now part of the Communication Workers' Union.

Last night, his son Victor paid tribute to a "good man, who spent his life fighting for the working man".

Born in Aberdeen in 1917, he left school aged 14 and took on a number of jobs before signing up to the 3rd Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders at the start of the war.

He served in North Africa, Sicily and Caen before returning to Aberdeen in 1945.

On his return, he joined the Post Office as a postman, and became postman's chairman of the Aberdeen and district amalgamated branch of the union in 1948.

He was postman's secretary from 1950-1963, and branch secretary from 1963-1977.

He took on many roles in the union during his career, including serving as committee member of the Scottish Postal Workers, and then chairman from 1975-1977.

He was also chairman of Aberdeen Trades Council from 1970-1977.

After returning from the war, he lived most of his life in Stockethill Crescent with his wife Jessie, who he married aged 21.

He remained there after she died until moving to Woodside House 18 months ago.

Described as a devoted family man, he is survived by four children, Michael, Irene, Victor and Gordon, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

His funeral is being held at Aberdeen Crematorium, East Chapel, at 2pm.
