Brentwood postmen set for 25 mile walk to Southend Pier in memory of late ex-colleague

A group of postmen from Brentwood are preparing themselves for an emotional 25-mile charity walk in memory of a former colleague.

The 30-strong clan are planning to set off from Royal Mail's Brentwood Delivery Office at around 6.30am today (June 4) and push their delivery trolleys all the way to the end of Southend Pier, where they plan to be joined by a number of colleagues from the Southend Delivery Office.

It's all in memory of their colleague Nigel Dudley, who died of cancer aged just 45 last year.

So far, the postmen have raised around £1,700 for Macmillan Cancer Support ahead of the event, but hope to raise that figure to almost £3,000 after the walk takes place.

Royal Mail Brentwood Delivery Office workers' representative Danny Attfield said that he and his work friends were totally shocked when they lost their dear friend and former colleague.

"Last October, we lost one of our posties, Nigel Dudley, to cancer at the age of 45," explained the 43 year-old postman from Basildon.

"The whole office was devastated as he was one of life's genuinely nice guys.

"At the Brentwood office, we decided that we wanted to do something to honour his memory and so we decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer because not only are they a fantastic charity, they looked after Nigel."

He added: "Having already completed an 18 mile charity walk to the Royal London Hospital, we decided to go one step further this time and walk 25 miles to Southend Pier.

"Hopefully we can raise lots of money for this amazing charity because I don't think I know anyone whose life hasn't been touched by cancer."
