NLer And Head Of Royal Mail Receives Honorary Doctorate From MUN

Memorial University has awarded an honorary doctorate degree to alumna Moya Greene, who has achieved notable success throughout her career. Greene accepted the honour this morning during spring convocation ceremonies in St John’s.

Greene, who was born in St. John’s, is president and CEO of the Royal Mail Group in Britain and holds the distinction of being the first woman and only non-Briton to be in the position. She was an instrumental force of influence during broad reform at Transport Canada and directed the deregulation of the Canadian Airline Industry and privatization of CN Rail.

In her address, Greene reminded graduates that change happens over time and referenced the fight for gender equality as being central throughout her career. She urged those convocating to stay focused on ending religious prejudice which is more prominent today.

Greene says it difficult to change a huge amount in society. She says in her life’s prime she was buoyed forward by the feminist movement and when she looks back over the years no change becomes evident. She says now it is important to keep cool heads and work to protect religious rights and freedoms within the Muslim community.
