Royal Mail share price: Chief executive sees pay package rise to £1.88m

Royal Mail Group’s (LON:RMG) chief executive Moya Greene saw her pay package rise to £1.88 million last year, the blue-chip company has disclosed. The news comes after the privatised postal operator updated investors on its annual performance last week, posting a rise in profits before tax.

Royal Mail’s share price has jumped in London in today’s session, having added 1.19 percent to 434.10p as of 13:11 BST, outperforming the broader UK market, with the benchmark FTSE 100 index having slipped marginally into the red and currently standing 0.10 percent lower at 7,507.48 points. The group’s shares have lost more than 17 percent of their value over the past year and are down by some six percent in the year-to-date.

Royal Mail disclosed in its annual report today that its chief executive Moya Greene’s pay package for the financial 2016/2017 year had climbed to £1.88 million, up from £1.53 million in the prior-year period. While her salary remained unchanged at £548,000, she benefitted from a £440,000 deferred annual bonus. Her long-term incentive plan figure, however, dropped from £302,000 in the financial 2015/2016 year, to £209,000.

The news comes as the postal operator continues to struggle to find a solution to its pension woes, having signalled that its current pension scheme is unaffordable beyond next year.

“We continue to work closely with our unions on a sustainable and affordable solution for the provision of future pension benefits,” the group said in its annual report.

The 15 analysts offering 12-month price targets for Royal Mail for the Financial Times have a median target of 479.00p, with a high estimate of 590.00p and a low estimate of 330.00p. As of May 19, the consensus forecast amongst 17 polled investment analysts covering the FTSE 100 postal operator advises investors to hold their position in the company.

As of 13:56 BST, Thursday, 25 May, Royal Mail share price is 434.35p.
