Moray MP to grill Royal Mail boss over charges

Moray MP Angus Robertson will meet the director of the Royal Mail to discuss “unfair” postage charges next week.

The meeting follows complaints about parcel surcharges being imposed in the north and north-east by Royal Mail subsidiary Parcelforce.

The MP will sit down with Royal Mail’s director of public affairs, David Gold, to set out the concerns expressed by customers in Moray.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Robertson said: “Recent reports have highlighted issues where Parcelforce is offering a universal service for personal customers, but hiking up surcharges for commercial contracts.

“This is not only discriminatory for customers, but it is also discriminatory for local businesses who could find it cheaper to send a parcel from Moray to London than to another local address.”

The MP has previously raised delivery charging issues, and helped persuade Halfords to change their delivery rates to ensure a “level playing field” for their customers in Moray.

He hopes to have the same success with the Royal Mail.

The politician added: “We need to get a level playing field for both customers and businesses so that people are not being unfairly penalised, and that Moray is an attractive place for people to set up businesses.

“I will be raising these issues at the highest levels of Royal Mail and I will be asking them for a fair solution for people in Moray and the Highlands.”
