British Airways appoints Tony McCarthy from Royal Mail

British Airways has announced Tony McCarthy as its new human resources chief.

In a surprise move, he joins the airline as director of people next month from Royal Mail, where he was group director people and organisational development.

McCarthy's departure leaves one of the biggest HR jobs in the UK up for grabs and caps a tough few months for Royal Mail following a bitter dispute with its main over over pay, modernisation and pensions.

Tony McCarthy steps into the role vacated by Neil Robertson in January this year.

The director for people is responsible for the people policies for BA's 43,000 staff in the UK and overseas covering organisation and development, training and recruitment, pay and reward, industrial relations, employee relations and culture change.

Just last week, a BA spokesman told Personnel Today that the recruitment process was "ongoing"

Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, said: "I'm delighted Tony is joining us and I look forward to welcoming him to British Airways in early December. He is bringing the leadership qualities and vision that will shape and direct our people strategy and make this an even greater place to work."

Prior to joining the Royal Mail, McCarthy, 51, spent almost 25 years with BAE Systems and held a range of top-level human resources roles, including the post of group HR director.

He is chair of the Centre for Performance Led HR, a group of HR academics and top practitioners, and recently became vice president of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

As they move from company to company the staff start to blur and then just become numbers. I hope British Airways have their strike contingency plans ready. We are okay though, we have a plasterboard expert looking after our future. I suggest he starts by covering a few warehouse windows so that the press don't get a glimpse of the backlogs that are hiding away there.

And what about the downstream access agreements, where other airlines can book seats on a BA flight at a rate set by the regulator. These other operators will also tell passengers that they're flying with their airline, their tickets will have their airline printed on them. Passengers will check in their luggage through their own staff, who will also see them on the plane, however BA will deliver the passengers the "final mile" to their destination, and their passengers will sit alongside BA's own passengers onboard a BA plane.

We know that sitting in a Lancaster bomber flying over Hamburg or The Ruhr while being fired at by several thousand anti-aircraft guns and hundreds of night fighters won't be popular, but surely the RAF pilots, gunners etc.should keep quiet about the high losses. After all, our Japanese competitors think nothing about crashing their planes into aircraft carriers and battleships. We think it's about time Air Vice Marshall Arthur Harris sacked some of the moaning Minnie rear gunners and made an example of them. When all is said and done, surely a life expectancy of two weeks is better than their fathers got when going over the top at Ypres or The Somme. Come on Arthur Harris!
