MP and residents unite for 'Save our Crown' fight

North London residents vowed to campaign against the threat to privatise their Crown Post Office at a packed public meeting in Harringay on Tuesday.

Local MP David Lammy, CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey and local councillor Noah Tucker made robust speeches, spelling out how damaging the loss of this service would be to the community.

Mr Lammy said that he thought this campaign was “winnable” and promised to write to the Post Office chief executive with his concerns.

The MP will also be taking up the matter in Parliament and seeking a meeting with the Government Minister responsible for the Post Office, he added.


In his contribution, Andy Furey explained that moving the Post Office into the back of a local shop would amount to “a greatly downgraded service and, in most cases, would lead to existing staff leaving and being replaced by untrained and low paid people.

“Our members, as well as members of the public and business owners alike have said this would be a disaster for them,” he pointed out.

Mr Tucker, who represents St Ann’s Ward, condemned the threat as an attack on local jobs and community services and vowed to take up the issue with colleagues on Harringay Council.
Members of the audience – several of whom had to stand, due to the higher than expected attendance – also spoke up, each setting out their own reasons for their determination to save Harringay Crown.

And the meeting concluded with the unanimous adoption of a motion to support the campaign and discourage any potential franchisees from taking over the service.
