Helmsdale in mourning for popular postman

The funeral of Helmsdale postman Tommy Macaulay, who died in a tragic accident last Friday, takes place tomorrow (Saturday).

Mr Macaulay was crushed by his own car as it rolled backwards while he was mending a fence at the entrance to the farm. The incident took place at Navidale Farm.

Tributes have been paid on social media to the 54-year-old father of two, nicknamed "Tomat" and known as the "quickest postie around" as he often used to run to deliver the mail.

He leaves behind his wife Jane – they had been married for 23 years – and son and daughter, Shaun (27) and Lauren (22).

His funeral takes place at the Church of Scotland, Helmsdale, at 11am and thereafter to Helmsdale cemetery. The family say that "the wearing of Scotland tops is welcome" at the service.

Tommy, who is a native of Helmsdale, lived at Lichfield Court, and had been a volunteer firefighter in the village for more than 20 years.

He was a keen footballer, having played for Helmsdale United and Bunillidh Thistle.

He was also a founding member of the Bunillidh Rowing Club and was one of the instigators of the building of the club’s two skiffs.

And he loved his golf, playing off a handicap of eight.

He has been described on social media as a "brilliant guy" and "amazing" and more than £3000 has been raised online for the family.

The police are not treating the tragic accident as suspicious but are examining CCTV images taken from a nearby camera.

THE Kildonan man who was left seriously injured as the result of being the victim in a hit and run accident in Inverness a fortnight ago, has been transferred from Raigmore Hospital to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Steven Fraser (36), who is a father of two and a gamekeeper, is said to be in a critical condition.

The accident happened as Mr Fraser was crossing Friars Bridge in the Highland capital with a group of friends when he was allegedly struck by a black Volkswagen estate car.

Two men have appeared in court following the incident but made no plea nor declaration. They have been remanded in custody.

POLICE are re-appealing for witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation into a fatal road traffic collision in Caithness.

It happened around 11.40pm on Friday, February 17, on the A836 at John O’Groats, near the Seaview Hotel and the junction with the A99.

Sadly, Timothy Humphreys, aged 34, was struck by a car and died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Humphries on or near the A836 between the A99 junction and Newton in the hour leading up to the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information and hasn’t already been in touch with officers is urged to contact Police on 101.
