Cleethorpes' post boxes to get a revamp this year!

ROYAL Mail have reassured a local Cleethorpes ward councillor over the painting of the resort's post boxes.

As previously reported Croft Baker's Labour Councillor Matthew Brown spoke out in dismay over the condition of many of Cleethorpes' iconic red post boxes. He wrote a passionate letter to Royal Mail asking for remedial action to be taken. He has now received a response outlining future plans.

Jonathan Clements, project manager – Churn (Royal Mail Group Property) addressing the issues of painting the post boxes in the Cleethorpes area writes: "By way of background, Royal Mail are just coming to the end of year four of a five year cycle to paint all the street furniture in the UK

Councillor Brown called for action to be taken on graffiti and damage.

"I've checked the file and all 28 boxes in the DN35 postcode region will receive a coat of paint in our financial year commencing in April 2017. I can't at this stage give you a specific month that the work will commence in that area but 90 per cent of our national programme is condensed into the spring/summer months to take advantage of the mild/dry weather.

"Your letter also mentions the repair of boxes – any non-cosmetic issue (ie other than painting) should be addressed at the time of fault. This would include any structural issue, graffiti, fly posting etc.

"The postman that visits the box every day should be reporting any issue like that to a help desk for resolution. If you find that there are outstanding issues of this nature in your ward then please feel free to highlight the problem."

Councillor Brown said: "I am delighted that Royal Mail have decided to push forward with a robust plan to bring the post boxes of Croft Baker back up to the highest standard. Residents tell me that they are proud to be British and care passionately about the maintenance of iconic street furniture.

"Post Boxes have been part of the British landscape since 1809 when one was installed on the wall of a Post Office in Wakefield. They are known world wide and are much loved items of yesteryear that still serve a purpose in modern society. Cleethorpes often falls upon the gaze of the world when it hosts a number of events, most recently National Armed Forces Day.

"As a result we must ensure that the public arena is of the highest standard. "I would like to thank Royal Mail on behalf of local residents for taking swift action following discussions and look forward to the Post Boxes in Croft Baker Ward serving the area for another 100 years."
