Shetland trading standards warn of fake Royal Mail scam

A warning has been made about a spate of scam emails being sent to Shetland residents claiming to be from the Royal Mail.

Trading standards officers warned that the emails appear convincing – but are actually a front.

Shetland Islands Council trading standards team leader David Marsh said: “One of these emails appears particularly convincing by using the Royal Mail logo, but then goes on to say that Royal Mail can claim compensation because nobody was at home when they tried to make the delivery.

“Most folk will know that Royal Mail doesn’t make such a charge, but some people could be caught out.

“There is a variety of these Royal Mail emails coming from different sources, but the problems will start if you click on the links within the email.

“It may be as simple as asking you to enter payment details, or it could be something that might corrupt your computer.

“We are also aware of phone calls from people claiming to be from Royal Mail, saying that they need your National Insurance number and a utilities bill before they can deliver your parcel. Our advice is to delete such emails and end any phone call that you think is not genuine.”
