Michael Peter Molloy, 52, had delayed entering a plea but has now admitted to the charges
A postman has admitted stealing post while he worked for the Royal Mail.
Michael Peter Molloy, from Middlesbrough , pleaded guilty to three charges when he appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court .
His first hearing in September was adjourned while a psychiatric report was prepared, after his solicitor Belinda Dobson said it had come to light that Molloy may have had autism.
But at court this week, District Judge Kristina Harrison said that Molloy should have pleaded guilty at the earlier hearing.
His solicitor on Wednesday, Colin Sleeman, asked Judge Harrison if Molloy’s sister could come into court to act as his carer.
“How many years did he work for the Royal Mail?” asked the judge.
After hearing he had been employed for 26 years without the need for a carer, she continued: “Well then no, she can’t. She can sit at the back of the court. Let’s not gild the lily Mr Sleeman.”
Molloy, 52, of Dufton Road, Linthorpe , admitted stealing five postal packets containing greeting cards and £30 cash on December 1, 2015; stealing a packet containing a greeting card and gift card on March 21, 2016; and stealing nine postal packets containing greeting cards and £55 cash on April 6, 2016.
Judge Harrison ordered that a pre-sentence report be carried out by the probation service, before Molloy is sentenced on January 11 at Teesside Magistrates’ Court.
And responding to the fact that the Royal Mail had not send its prosecutor to the hearing, Judge Harrison continued: “Can we ensure that a prosecutor is delivered by January 11?
“I’m sure even the Royal Mail can manage that.”
