An Army bomb disposal unit has been called in to examine a Royal Mail postbox after it "suffered significant damage" in a small explosion.

A 300ft (100-metre) cordon was set up and a road closed in the Ketley area of Telford in Shropshire, following reports of an incident.

West Mercia Police said Sinclair Gardens had been shut and an explosive's team were at the scene at around 2.10pm.

Approximately 20 residents were moved from the area as a precaution and they have now been allowed to return home.

Police are searching for a BMW after the explosion in a post box in Telford, which caused 20 people to be evacuated from their homes.



A 100 metre cordon was put in place and approximately 20 people were evacuated from their homes but were able to return a few hours later.

Sergeant Donna-Louise Hankin said: "At this stage we are unable to confirm what caused the damage but thankfully nobody was injured in the incident. Enquiries are now underway to identify a possible cause and the individuals responsible for this incident which caused a lot of disruption to the local community.

"A distinctive grey BMW three series car was seen in the area a few minutes before the explosion and we are appealing for any information which could help to trace this vehicle."

The car has been described as grey, over 10 years old and is believed to be left hand drive.

It was seen driving away on Waterloo Road in direction of Ketley Business Park.

Royal Mail spokesperson Val Bodden said: "We are assisting police with their inquiries into this incident. Mail was recovered from the box and is being processed through our system. We would ask customers to use the nearest postboxes at Riddings Close, Broadway, Ketley town and Overdale Post Office until the box can be replaced.

"Mindless acts of vandalism of this nature are relatively few, but where they do happen we take them extremely seriously. Every item of mail is important to us and we would encourage anyone with information about this incident to contact the police.”
