Post in Brentwood is being delivered up to 12 days late due to a shortage of staff, it has been claimed.

Residents from across the town and Pilgrims Hatch have complained about the 'sporadic' postal service they have been receiving for the past six months.

Residents from across the town and Pilgrims Hatch have complained about the 'sporadic' postal service they have been receiving for the past six months.

Linda Ward, who lives in Harewood Road, Pilgrims Hatch, said she had one letter dated October 28 which arrived on November 9.

"It was a tax related thing for my business; it could have ended with them sending the bailiffs round," said the 46-year-old.

"It's been going on for months, we get post just two or three times a week, it's really annoying.

"I wrote an article for a magazine and they posted out a pre-publication copy and it didn't come until the magazine was out in the shops."

As well as post arriving late, residents have also complained that it is often delivered to the wrong address.

Caroline Lynch, who lives on Oliver Road in Shenfield, said the problems were not the fault of the staff, but of the management of Royal Mail.

"How can they let staff get so low that they can't send mail?" she said.

"I got a knock on the door on Thursday and the postman handed over loads of mail.

"He said 'you haven't had any mail for a while looking at this' and said they are really short staffed.

"He said he was round the corner the other day and he had about 12 birthday cards for his wife and her birthday was the day before."

The 46-year-old said the lateness of her post was concerning because she often receives hospital letters late.

"We are ringing them up saying where is it but they have sent it you, you just get it days later.

"I had breast cancer last year and I have to have regular checks with oncology.

"I had one on Wednesday, who knows if they will refer me for something else?"

She added: "We are coming up to Christmas, if the service is really bad now and we are only in November how bad will it be then?"

Councillor Louise McKinlay, leader of Brentwood Borough Council, has written to Royal Mail after being contacted by residents, particularly in Hutton and more rural areas of Brentwood.

"In some cases they're reporting a very sporadic delivery service and this has caused some frustration and anxiety when they're waiting for letters regarding hospital appointments for example," she said.

"The decline in service is very frustrating and some cases causes worry or upset if a household is waiting on mail relating to vital hospital appointments or the arrival of children's birthday cards.

"In general it seems that the service has become very unreliable in the Brentwood area.

"It would be good to get reassurance that normal service will shortly resume."

However a spokeswoman for Royal Mail said there were no reports of any issues at the Brentwood delivery office and that all mail received is being delivered every day.

She added: "We are concerned to hear that customers in some parts of Brentwood may not be receiving the high quality of service we are committed to provide as all mail we receive for these addresses is going out for delivery every day.

"We will also be monitoring these particular delivery walks to ensure that all mail continues to be delivered on a daily basis."

Yup no reports because the manager wants his bonus so nothing reported.... mail still screwed up but not officially so that's ok then.

Been happening in our office all year. Staffing levels have been run into the ground. Often come back after a day off to find the previous days mail in the frame because they had "no one to cover it"

same problems in our office , the line manager will remove the smallest road on each of the frames ( letters only ) on all the walks left and deliver them himself , as apparently so long as one road is delivered then it is not classed as a failure
