Post office war memorial moved to Maidstone delivery office in Bircholt Road

A war memorial honouring Maidstone post office staff who served during the First World War has been moved out of the town centre.

The marble plaque enjoyed pride of place in the ground floor area of the Bank Street premises until the service was relocated to Week Street in August.

It is now on display at the customer service point at Maidstone delivery office in Bircholt Road on the Parkwood Industrial Estate.

The staff commemorated are: F Moody, Royal West Kent Regiment; G Meek, London Regiment; E E Froud, Royal Engineers Signals; W G Maytum, East Kent Regiment; H R Mount, Royal Engineers Signals; J T Robinson, Royal Warwick Regiment; R W Black, London Regiment and S W J Dann, Royal Engineers Signals.

The memorial was originally hung on the wall behind the counter at the old post office in King Street in 1922, and was not touched until 2008.

When the service moved to Bank Street it was feared the memorial would be thrown on the skip.

However it was painstakingly restored and the word enamelled over two months by stonemason and Maidstone Borough councillor Gordon Newton.

Royal Mail and Post Office are to hold a special ceremony at the centre on Thursday, December 1 The service will start at 11.00am. The customer service point will be closed whilst it takes place, but reopen shortly afterwards.
