A young girl fighting a serious illness has been 'overwhelmed' by postcards and letters sent from all over the world in a bid to put a big smile on her face.

Eight-year-old Mia Parnell featured on the front page of the Burton Mail last week after a video released online saw her plea for post to cheer her up.

Hatton youngster Mia's health is deteriorating and doctors have warned her mystery degenerative illness will claim her life.

A young girl fighting a serious illness has been 'overwhelmed' by postcards and letters sent from all over the world in a bid to put a big smile on her face.

Eight-year-old Mia Parnell featured on the front page of the Burton Mail last week after a video released online saw her plea for post to cheer her up.

The response to Mia's video has been astonishing with more than 100 postcards and letters dropping through the door in the past week.

Mum Sarah Parnell said: "It has been amazing and it has been really making Mia smile. People have been sending cards, pictures of pets, pictures of the children sending cards, and even little gifts – including a knitted blanket which she sits with on the sofa now.

"They've come from Thailand, Australia, New York, Washington, New Zealand and Florida – everywhere. I'm amazed by the kindness, it just shows how something small can grow into something really special."

Plenty of mail has come from the local area too with many saying they read the Burton Mail's article and wanted to bring Mia some happiness. One of the more unusual items so far has been a message in an actual bottle sent by the Golden Lion Hotel in Hunstanton, Norfolk.

All of it is helping Mia, who is now only well enough to attend school part-time, to smile on a daily basis.

Mrs Parnell said: "She fights so bravely and she tries not to show any pain. Mia tires very easily now though – even opening the mail tires her out.

"In typical Mia style though she said to me the other day 'all my mail is bringing me lots of happiness', which is so nice to hear."

For the last few years Mia's family have been on a mission to make her life as happy as possible, not knowing what might be around the corner as she fights her illness.

Coming up they have organised a Christmas fair at the Jubilee Hall in Hatton, to take place between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, November 12. The event will feature games and fun for children, with stalls selling everything from crafts to cakes.

Mia's family hope to use the money raised to organise an extra special Christmas party for Mia and other children in Hatton – to bring that little bit more happiness during the festive period.
