TESCO is believed to have made a multimillion offer for the Royal Mail sorting office in Southend - the second it has put on the table for a prime town centre site.
The supermarket chain is said to be keen to build a megastore in or near the town centre.
It has already been in talks with Southend Council about using the B&Q site in Short Street when the DIY store moves to its new building at Fosset Farm in July.
It is believed to have made an initial offer of £10million to Royal Mail for its sorting office, also in Short Street. That was turned down, but it is now believed to have made another offer, which would include a new building in Priory Crescent.
A source, the wife of a Royal Mail worker, said: "We just don't know what's going to happen. The change would be awful.
"A lot of people would lose their jobs. And a lot of people will lose their overtime, which many use to top up their income."
Officially, Royal Mail says it has no intention of moving.
James Taylor, Royal Mail spokesman, said: "There are currently no plans to move the mail centre."
But staff fear the Royal Mail could still be tempted to change its mind.
They think it could use the opportunity to install new equipment which would mean fewer people would be needed and there would be fewer overtime opportunities.
There was no one available at Tesco to comment.

re: Exactly my point
Maybe I'm being unfair here, but all these people who commented seemed to care about how much money they can squeeze out of Royal Mail. Northing about impact on customer service, or the opportunity for RM to possibly make some money and possibly plug a who in it's black hole.
I am not saying that other RM people arne't looking out for their money, but let's not fool oursevles and say that every postie where' the uniform with pride, a tear in their eye and would take a sword through the heart for their beloved company.
Please note I worked with a guy who got an MBE for services to the community whilst being a postie and it made me sick the way we treated him!

..bollox FOzz.
We come to work to earn a living, end of,you've just turned down a contract because you did not think that you were being offered enough!!!!
Not sure why you've put that comment in there for, seems to me people are worried about their jobs and their future earnings!!
And once again there's the possibility that WE are paying for RM's short comings!!!!!
Ps Over to L Tommo

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Johnny pick mate, I agree!
Delivery Officers ARE a big part of our face with the general public and i feel, (doing delivs, Dist, and Proc in a M.C./Security as well) Myself. The most satisfaction i got in the job was ON DELIVERYS. We (as i started on Delvs) are a credit over all to locals lives. Im not blowing my or anyones trumpet but when you here of storys of posties saving peoples lives In some cases, by being the ONLY person that the customer sees all day some times only person for weeks. Then YES We have a very important job and it shows. Yes i was that proud New boy in a brand new uniform with ROYAL MAIL on it.. So Fozzie when you bang on about Customer service its the top screws you rubbed shoulders with that have not one clue of just that!! A SERVICE TO THE CUSTOMERS.. They withhold mail at a drop of a hat, (operational needs) cut duties when It should go out on O/T. and now brought a One delivery a day because they (RM top brass) Done a few Q&A's sessions and in there wisdom came to this conclusion... This One delivery makes the time of delivery to any point of the walk a 3.1/2 time diff. Where before Everyone had there mail in a much shorter time limit. Even if done back to front as some Posties do.. Left handers.. How can this be what the public want??? Nearly 4 hrs when waiting for important Mail??? I dont as a customer.. Do u?? Lets face it its all about cutting the posties out/down. Cut costs, Get rid of US. bring in part time housewifes and students that DONT GIVE A FLYING MONKEYS ARSE!!! FACT!!! Now Royal Mail and there machine type screws have knocked the Pride out of me and many many others... FACT!!! You right tho on the Money bit, We all come to work for ££££... And??? RM SCREWS HAVE PUT US IN THIS SHITE HOUSE WE NOW FIND OUR SELVES!!! NO ONE ELSE!!!!
OUT
DONT LET THE SCREW HANDBOOK BACK INTO YOUR BEDTIME READING AGAIN PLEASE FOZZIE!!
