Three East Grinstead postmen are running the Amsterdam Marathon in memory of two former colleagues who died last year.
Angela Naindy and Mark Beak served the area for 50 years collectively, but passed away suddenly from cancer and heart problems respectively.
During her spell as a postwoman Mrs Naindy, 46, who started in 1989, spent the majority of her career in the Furnace Wood area.
She died on October 28 having battled cancer for a number of years.
Mr Beak worked as a postman from 1991 up until he passed away on June 13 last year, aged 51.
He used to do a round which covered Shovelstrode Lane and Ashurst Wood.
James Fulham, a colleague of both Mrs Naindy and Mr Beak, explained how the pair both passed away suddenly.
He said: "People were completely taken aback, we were all really devastated when Mark passed away. With Angela we knew she had cancer and had battled it for years, but she carried on working until close to the end.
"Mark just went sick one day, phoned up and he was told he needed an operation and we sadly never saw him again.
"It is always hard when you work so closely with someone, especially when they both had young families."
Mr Fulham, of Harwoods Lane, East Grinstead, is tackling the Amsterdam Marathon on October 16 with colleagues Chris Hall and Graham Drapper.
The 42-year-old explained that all three of them are keen runners.
He added: "I have done the Brighton Marathon in the past, and had applied for the one in Berlin. Like the London one it is done by a ballot [so is difficult to get a place in]. Then we came across the one in Amsterdam and figured it would be a change, and the prospect of Amsterdam being flat should hopefully help with our time.
"Before Angela died she did a couple of marathons and I reckon she would be quite pleased we are doing this.
"We are running for Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation, we haven't set ourselves any kinds of targets but it would be nice to give each charity a couple of hundred pounds."
