Police have warned shop workers in Northumberland about the cash scam known as 'ringing in the changes' after a Post Office was targeted

Shop workers are being warned about a cash scam after conmen tricked a cashier into handing over money.

Northumbria Police have urged shop workers in Northumberland to be cautious after two men conned a staff member at the Post Office.

The men went into the Post Office on Wagonway Road in Alnwick at 11.43am on Saturday, June 25 and asked to change £660 in £10 notes to £20 notes.

After the change, the men said they wanted Euros instead and confused the cashier causing her to hand over too much money.

Both men are described as being of Eastern European appearance.

The first was in his early 30s, 5ft 5-6ins, with a medium build, short dark hair and a beard. He was wearing a dark baseball cap, light coloured shirt and jeans.

The second was in his early 20s, 5ft 3ins, with a fat build, longer black and curly hair, and was wearing a white T-shirt and khaki pants.

Officers say they are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the Post Office at the time or has been a victim of a similar con, known as ‘ringing in the changes’.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who was in the area who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact them.
