Beetles, crickets, pig snout and ants were on the menu at lunch for Plymouth's royal mail staff as they took part in their own bush tucker-style trial.

A number of staff at Royal Mail swapped the sarnie and a packet of crisps for a whole bunch of weird and wonderful critters to raise money for the Stroke Assoication.

More than 20 staff took part in the challenge and have raised more than £2,000 for the Stroke Assoication. Royal Mail have agreed to double the amount raised.

Karine Mears, unit manager at Royal Mail, said: "It was a fantastic event and we are really pleased that everyone got into the spirit of it, even when faced with pig's tail, waterbugs and century eggs – there were 16 bush tucker dishes on the menu in total.

"We want to thank everyone who supported us and helped raise money for such a deserving cause."

The money raised from the Royal Mail charity partnership with the Stroke Association will provide Life After Stroke grants to around 10,000 people, giving a vital lifeline to ensure stroke survivors and their families can rebuild their lives.

Doris Lawton, from Tameron Foliot, who has suffered from a stroke has seen the direct result the grants can provide. The 83-year-old said: "I can't thank Royal Mail enough for the grants they are funding. I never thought I would be able to get any help after my stroke, but thanks to Royal Mail's support of the Stroke Association my application for a grant was accepted.

"Having a wheelchair has enabled me to get around a lot easier and has had a positive effect on my recovery – it has allowed me to continue to do the things I did before."

Jim Swindells, director of fundraising at the Stroke Association, said: "A big thank you to the Royal Mail team for their time and generosity in taking part in such a unique event. Royal Mail has really gone above and beyond in this crazy challenge. The funds they have raised will help people like Doris who have been affected by stroke."
