Royal Mail staff who worked in a postal sorting office jailed for over 9 years after £1 million fraud was uncovered

A joint investigation by the Royal Mail and the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit (DCPCU), has resulted in two postal sorting office workers being jailed for a substantial cheque fraud.

Moshin Abbas, 36, and Anjam Shah, 37, both worked at the Royal Mail sorting office in Luton. While manually sorting post, Abbas and Shah intercepted mail that was destined for local companies which regularly received cheque payments.

The intercepted cheques worth over £1 million were then paid into business bank accounts that had been set up in the same name as the target company. The funds were subsequently quickly removed from the accounts through cash withdrawals, transfers to beneficiary accounts and payments to merchants.

The DCPCU – the police unit sponsored by the banking industry and made up of officers from the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police Service, bank investigators and support staff from Financial Fraud Action UK, found a total of £1.082 million worth of cheques were stolen by Abbas over a period of one and a half years. Shah was involved for just over a year, and played a part in the theft of £795,000 worth of the total amount. Searches of the fraudsters’ home addresses found a number of stolen, but as yet unbanked, cheques, along with over £12,000 in cash.

Today, 6 May 2015, Abbas was sentenced to 5 years 3 months imprisonment, with a 9 month sentence for money laundering to run concurrently. Shah was sentenced to a total of 4 years and 1 month imprisonment, including a month for assault.

Detective Constable Aine Matthews, who led the investigation for the DCPCU, said: “Abbas and Shah took advantage of the trust placed in them to carry out this large-scale fraud and we are pleased that they have now been brought to justice for their crimes. Today’s sentence sends a strong message to others considering following a similar path – you will be caught and punished.”

Tony Marsh, Royal Mail Group Security Director, said: “Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of our postmen and women, who work hard to provide a first-class service for our customers six days a week.

“It is a criminal offence to tamper with or delay the delivery of mail and anyone caught doing so will face serious disciplinary measures and Royal Mail will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

“The safety and security of mail is of the utmost importance to this business and Royal Mail will not allow the actions of any individual to damage the good reputation of our thousands of hardworking postmen and women.”

Given that claret and blue are the colours of West Ham F C which has quite a reputation for racism we might be concerned that your "educated guess" could be based on Moshin Abbas and Anjam Shah not being indigenous British names.

More like uneducated, and frankly its not welcome on here not matter how thinly veiled.

Not talking about these issues or trying to bury them beneath layers of PC froth doesn't help anyone.
That's what happened at Rotherham, Oxford, Burnley and the rest (albeit in a different type of crime) and the resulting fall-out will takes years to clean up, and will live long in the memories of many.
Empirical data is needed, although to attempt to gather it would result in the usual and career-ending accusations of racism from some, so we all just plod on in a mist of ignorance and prejudice, and that really doesn't help anyone to understand the overall picture or address the problems.

Unfortunately not the first time this happened. If you recall I recounted a story from the press in the 90's whereby (I think it may again have been Luton?) south-Asians had taken cheques payable to the Inland Revenue and altered them to the name 'Inlandi Reveni' or similar making hundreds of K by opening bank accounts in those names. Unbelievably the banks never cottoned on and it was only when these sorting office staff started parking Porsches etc. in the staff car park that they got caught due to the obvious suspicion that raised.

You have to accept (as even the enlightened Trevor Phillips has!!) that certain crimes DO tend to be ethnocentric. Football violence and general disorder tend to be indigenous males, distraction thefts in jewellers etc. Roma gypsies, knife crime black, cannabis farming (large scale) Vietnamese, prostitution E. European the horrific organized paedophilic grooming/rape - well I won't go there in deference to the big man.

These figures have been in the press a few times, gleaned by FOI requests to various Police Forces etc. If it's good enough for Trevor Philips, it's good enough for me....

Admission! OK, being honest as soon as I read the description of the crime I was expecting the names to be non-indigenous. Not because of the 'R' - word but it's natural that your mind projects previous knowledge you've picked up when looking at associative articles.

Another thread taken off track. Yes, I will continue to lock threads that contain posts that are racist in nature, though not all posts were racist in this case.

However, I will state clearly I am not having this forum taken over by discussions on racism whether it's from the far left or the far right. We are not a forum for that, there are plenty on both sides of the argument use your appropriate one.

The reason I am not allowing threads to decend into racism is purely selfish, I have been the target of it, but more importantly its too much work because people on both sides of the argument start sending me PMs or reporting people, and I have far too much to do than to police a discusion that has little to do with this board.

Don't like that tough.
