Royal Mail managers ramp up industrial action in pay dispute

Nearly 5,000 Royal Mail managers are ramping up industrial action in their long-running pay dispute, as bosses dig in their heels over making an improved offer.
Postal deliveries to 27 million homes across the UK will eventually face disruption as 4,800 managers start an overtime ban from 05.00 Wednesday, 18 May. This builds on from the work to rule which began on 4 May.
Unite officer for Royal Mail managers Brian Scott said: “We had talks on Tuesday (10 May) with the Royal Mail management, but no progress was made – they appear to have dug their heels in over making an improved pay offer.”
The managers, members of Unite, the country’s largest union, voted overwhelmingly for industrial action, after rejecting the ‘paltry’ 1.3 per cent pay offer for the year starting September 2015.
Brian Scott added: “The lack of positive response from the company has given our members no alternative, but to introduce this overtime ban.
“The work to rule introduced on 4 May has been well supported by Unite members and I expect that the overtime ban will receive similar strong support.
“Many Royal Mail managers do not get paid overtime, but those that do are relied on to ensure that the operation, including the delivery of mail to households and companies, is achieved.
“The industrial action will have an increasingly detrimental impact on deliveries to 27 million homes across the UK.
“Unite is willing to sit down with the company to find a solution, but it needs to acknowledge and recognise the valuable contribution that Unite members make to the success of the business which the current pay offer does not reflect.
“Should the company continue to adopt this negative approach, we cannot rule out full strike action.”
Unite has said that the pay dispute is part of a much wider set of problems engulfing the now privately-owned Royal Mail, which include the possible failure to meet its Universal Service Obligation (USO) to deliver letters six days-a-week to the 27 million addresses; massive cost-cutting and redundancies.
ENDS
The dispute does not include Parcelforce which is covered by a separate agreement

Its a joke, the managers come in on time, do whatever they do with their clipboards while we all work, soon as we go out, start their 4 and half hour coffee brake, with periods of looking at a computer screen, then go home on time, so nothing has changed for that one bit.

what a joke , work to rule never worked as they just used the temp managers (failed posties) to mop up and do there work as there not in the same union if any , and how can you do an o/t ban when all managers are on a set wage and don't get o/t ? the problem is they wont strike as unite and r/m know that it wont affect the job , no balls lol.

Most of these managers are well paid for what they actually bring to the business, in most cases elsewhere their job description would earn them the title of supervisor or team leader and far less pay, the greatest insult I've ever had in this job came from a DSM when he told me I'd make a good manager.
Reality check, when you spend most of your morning pushing things around and stacking things those skills are only really transferable if you want to wear a hi-vis and hang about Tesco.

good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Noticed an increase in pressurising OPG's to do lapsing since this work to rule came in. Roll on them getting a pay rise, the bullying and pressure on OPG's will hit record levels as they move heaven and earth to please their paymasters.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

As posties are a major shareholder in Royal Mail. WE should be dictating to managers. Reduce ALL management to part time. Max 25 hours contract. Decrease full time to 35 hours by 2020. Increase p/t accordingly. Line managers are the major drain on Royal Mail. If they don't like it. Look for another job!!

Good. They might stop prepping walks or inward sorting (which is our job) as soon as they arrive for work and start managing, which is what they are paid for.

Good to see the managers have their finger on the pulse at your gaff. The Work to rule started on 4 May and the Overtime Ban is starting on Wednesday.
