Bungling Devon council writes a letter to a bus stop

A BUNGLING council has sent a letter telling businesses how to reduce their waste - to one of their own BUS STOPS.

The daft delivery was handed to a nearby business by a dismayed postman who found nowhere to leave it at the bus stop.

The envelope containing a postcard was addressed to: "JCDecaux UK Ltd, Bus Shelter 401, Southway Drive".

A local in Plymouth, who saw it said: "Ironically it contained a blank sheet of paper with the address on and a double-sided postcard about business waste.

"I don't know how much business waste a bus stop generates but I'm glad the council are on the case."

Plymouth City Council signed a 20-year deal in 2000 which saw national firm JCDecaux install more than 200 state-of-the-art bus shelters in the city.

As a result they gained the world's largest network of solar-powered bus shelters as well as a number of real-time passenger information displays.

The council said: "A postcard was recently sent out to all businesses in Plymouth with the intention of reminding them of their responsibilities around business and trade waste and how it should be disposed of.

"Unfortunately the list used contained some errors and a number of postcards have been returned to the Council as address unknown.

"The list did also include this bus stop, so clearly this was sent in error and we will need to review the list as a matter of urgency."

They said they were unable to reveal exactly how many of the 500-plus bus shelters in the city were sent the same 'waste-warning' postcards.

They added: "Fortunately, the postcards are not time-sensitive and the information is still relevant, so those that have been returned to us can be re-used."

The postcard included details for businesses about national trade waste legislation such as the need to be a registered waste carrier, the need to use a licensed waste business if another firm transports your company waste and the fines businesses could face if they ignore the legislation.
