ROYAL Mail says that final decisions have not been made about futures of the Tyldesley and Atherton sorting offices after claims that their proposed closures had been 'put on hold'.
The Journal reported last month that a campaign to prevent the closure of the two Royal Mail centres had been launched after Royal Mail confirmed that it is looking into moving the services to Wardley in Swinton.
Earlier this week Nazia Rehman, Tyldesley Labour Party's prospective candidate in May's election, released a statement saying that the plans had been halted.
But a Royal Mail spokesman said: “We are continuing to discuss the proposal to relocate Tyldesley and Atherton delivery offices to our Manchester north west delivery office with our people and our unions.
“No final decision has been made in relation to the proposal.”
Ms Rehman said: "We have learned from the Communication Workers Union that plans by Royal Mail to close its delivery office in Tyldesley have been put on hold.
“The news came 48 hours after local Labour councillors met with senior Royal Mail officials at the Tyldesley facility.
“The councillors received assurances that the quality of service to the people of Tyldesley and Astley would not be compromised by a possible a move to Swinton and that any proposed changes would not impact adversely on the staff directly involved.”
The campaign against the relocation had more than 1,300 signatures online in the first three days of its launch, with residents saying a 10-mile round trip to the next nearest Royal Mail office would not be possible for many people.
