Christchurch post office closure ?only temporary?

THE post office could be coming back to Christchurch.

Residents were left shocked when the post office in Church Street closed suddenly on Saturday - with no indication on whether it would ever reopen.

However a Post Office Ltd spokesman has now confirmed the closure is only "temporary".

The spokesman said: “Due to circumstances beyond our control the post office in Christchurch temporarily closed on Saturday, April 2.


“We know how important post office services are to people in Christchurch and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.

“We would like to assure customers that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reopen a Post Office service to the local community as soon as possible.”

Noel Adams, director of Christchurch Life Ltd, who took over running the post office in February 2014, decided to liquidate the business after it was deemed “no longer financially viable”.

Bournemouth-based insolvency advisors Mark Liddle Partnership Ltd has been handling the liquidation process - and are asking anyone interested in taking over the running of the post office to get in touch.

"We would be interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they could keep the business going," said managing partner Mark Liddle.

The decision to close the post office came after Ms Adams spent months trying to keep the business afloat.

Speaking to the Echo last week she said: ““I am struggling to compete with cheaper parcel delivery companies and banks and businesses on the high street which now offer a lot of our services.

“There is also the fact that my business rates and rent costs are very high because we are located in Christchurch.

“It puts me in a very difficult position.”

The news was met with concern among residents who feared the closure will leave elderly and vulnerable people living in the town unable to access basic postal services.
