Royal Mail has revealed the top towns and cities where the most online shopping took place over the Easter bank holiday.

Residents in the South West were the most prolific Easter weekend shoppers, with Exeter – the cathedral city - and Torquay – the seaside resort town- topping the list, followed by Aberdeen –Scotland’s third most populated city.

The findings are based on analysis of Royal Mail Tracked parcels accepted from retailers and businesses into the Royal Mail network on Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th March

The Easter bank holiday is traditionally the time to buy a summer wardrobe, new garden furniture and get to grips with DIY

To bring greater flexibility to online retailers and ensure customers receive their online orders more quickly Royal Mail has enhanced its Royal Mail Tracked48 product, offering acceptance into its network up until midnight (23:59), all year-round at Mail Centres and Regional Distribution Centres across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

The top ten UK online shopping hotspots for Easter bank holiday 2016 are*:

7. Shrewsbury
8. Carlisle
9. Milton Keynes
10.Truro

*The data excludes areas with less than 50,000 delivery points

The findings are based on the average number of parcels delivered to each address in that area following the Bank Holiday weekend. The figures were derived from an analysis of Royal Mail Tracked parcels accepted from retailers and businesses into the Royal Mail network on Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th March.

As always, customers shopping online want their orders processed as quickly as possible so we have extended the acceptance times for ourTracked48 services making it possible for retailers to insert their parcels into our network up until 12pm for delivery either the next working day or in two working days”.
