A SCAM alert has been issued after tricksters struck at a Post Office in the region.
The con, known as “ringing the changes”, involved two women who spoke in broken English, who asked to withdraw a large amount of Euros using sterling to pay for them.
The women then changed their mind and began to explain that they wanted to send the money electronically. They were given their pounds back and they handed back the Euros to the post office staff before leaving quickly.
Staff at the Post Office at Castleton, near Whitby, later realised the women had kept around half of the Euros which amounted to £440 worth.
This incident happened at around 2.30pm on Monday, March 21, and the suspects are described as two Asian women with olive coloured skin.
The first was aged in her mid-50s, around 5ft tall, overweight with black hair. All of her top teeth were gold apart from the front two. She was wearing a multicoloured head scarf.
The second is aged in her 30s, of medium build, around 5ft 6in tall with black hair and wearing a beige coloured cardigan with no buttons.
It is believed they have carried out similar crimes at post office premises around the country.
Police are appealing to anyone who has any information about the two women including any business owners who may have been targeted by them, or can help identify them, to come forward.

Yes, a common scam along with the pickpockets and 'crowding' tactics in jeweller's shops to steal an expensive item. But the previous guy was right, if the clerk counted back in the exact amount of euros he gave out before refunding the pounds, it wouldn't work. It relies on the clerk assuming the bundle of euros he gave out was untouched - the gypsies keep the euros visible to the clerk but with one side just below the edge of the counter. The other one will tug out the centre notes out of view from that lower edge. To the clerk the 'customer' hasn't ever taken them from his/her sight and he readily refunds the pounds. I've seen it lots of times in videos plus the local press photo gallery of wanted.
