From this morning, all postal, telecommunications and financial services workers can now access immediate CWU membership through the new online joining procedure.
Following successful internal testing and live trials at three of our branches, the new system officially ‘went live’ nationwide today, reports CWU senior deputy general secretary Tony Kearns.
“People can now join in five clicks,” explains Tony, who has spearheaded the introduction of the new method which, he says: “Makes it faster for reps to recruit and quicker for workers to access first-class representation.
“Under the old system, a membership application could take several weeks to process, but now an applicant will receive an immediate confirmation email and a national membership number as soon as she or he has pushed the ‘send’ button.”
Within a week, the new member will then receive full details of the branch to which they have been allocated, the contacts for their nearest CWU rep and branch officer, and a full membership pack.
“Online joining will be used by our reps and organisers who carry out recruitment activities and also will be a part of the CWU induction sessions which take place within the major businesses that employ the majority of CWU members,” our SDGS continued, adding that the union’s industrial executives have received a full ‘online joining’ presentation and a letter has gone out to all branches briefing about the new system.
“Of course, this won’t of itself solve all of the challenges and difficulties we face, but online joining is long overdue and it will be a significant improvement.”
