Unpleasant pheasant attacks postie after seeing red

A POSTMAN is on the run from a feisty pheasant in a village near Cardigan where 12 years ago a similar bird also took a dislike to the local postie and his van.

A cock pheasant dubbed Fiery Fred made the headlines in 2004 when chasing now retired postman Delano Thomas in the village of Moylegrove before the bird was captured and taken to a turkey farm.

Now another unpleasant pheasant who many call Rocky has taken over and chases postie Steve Jerry Williams on a daily basis in exactly the same community in north Pembrokeshire.

The bird, believed to be living in woodland nearby, seems to know what time Jerry delivers and collects mail and as soon as his van enters the village Rocky moves into action.

As the postie delivers to houses the pheasant pecks at his boots and when he opens a mailbox in the centre of the village Rocky tries to peck his hand.

Jerry, a veteran footballer with Costcutter League club St Dogmaels said “I’m used to snarling dogs and last summer had to run from a swarm of wasps, but this is something else.

“Rocky appears to be getting more fierce and nasty by the day but I’m managing to do my round although he tries to prevent me,” he said.

It is believed the cock pheasant is reacting to the red colour of the postal van.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We’ve had various attacks on our posties over the years but not often by a bird.”
