POLICE are investigating the theft of high value Special Delivery parcels from a Royal Mail delivery van in York city centre.

A York businessman has told The Press that one of the parcels was being sent to him and contained watches worth £60,000, including a Rolex worth £35,000.

He said he could not sustain a loss of such value, and it threatened the survival of his business. “It’s an absolute nightmare,” he said. “I haven’t slept a wink.”

He also said he did not feel the police and Royal Mail had initially treated the theft with any sense of urgency or awareness of its importance to customers such as him.

North Yorkshire Police said the force received a report from the Royal Mail at 10.09am on Tuesday that parcels had been stolen from a delivery van during delivery rounds in York.

“It is believed that the items were stolen while the vehicle was parked in Castlegate in York between 9.20am and 10am,” said a spokeswoman.

“They were reported to us as high value, Special Delivery parcels.

“Inquiries are continuing into the incident including liaison with the Royal Mail.”

She said anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Castlegate area on Tuesday morning, or had any other information that could help the investigation, was asked to contact the force on 101, select option 1 and pass information to the Force Control Room.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail can confirm that a number of Special Delivery items were stolen from a Royal Mail van on the morning of Tuesday March 8.

(a) if the sender knew that 'Special Delivery' was for compensation up to £2,500
(b) if the thief might have known which van to target.
