Royal Mail increases parcel charges and stamp prices AGAIN as post offices struggle

Internet customers will be exempt from the rise in parcel charges but traditional customers will be penalised

Royal Mail has been slated over hiking charges for posting parcels if customers don’t do it online.

Sending a small parcel at a local post office will cost 5p more and a medium-sized one will be 6p more.

But internet customers will be exempt from the charges, which come into effect on March 29, along with a 1p increase to first and second-class stamps.

Royal Mail, privatised two years ago, said the price difference will reflect the cost of providing online and over-the-counter services.

But postmasters fear the “two tier” system will penalise traditional customers.

Many branches are already struggling for business.

The government-funded network has been reduced from 19,000 branches in 2000 to about 11,500 now.

George Thomson, of the National Federation of SubPostmasters, said: “We are not Luddites but Royal Mail must ensure it does not take a significant sum away from post offices.”

Royal Mail made a £740million profit last year but its parcel service is under increasing pressure following Amazon’s decision to set up a courier network.

Royal Mail said: “We pay the Post Office for every parcel it handles, online or over the counter.

“The growth of online shopping means significant volumes being processed through post offices.”
