In the video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday (23 February), the robot – a very human-shaped 5′ 9″ and 180-pounds – is shown picking up two 5kg boxes and placing them on a shelf. It also manages to get back on its feet after it is knocked over by a boisterous co-worker.

A number of tech journals have already speculated that the video suggests that potential future applications for the robot could including working in fulfilment centres and delivery services.

Interestingly, Google recently filed a US patent for a driver-less parcel delivery vehicle. Perhaps the two technologies could be matched up to produce a human-free delivery model?

"This is really the end of manual labor. When you watch this video, he's walking through the snow; he's wobbly, but he gets back up," the tech investor told CNBC's "Squawk Alley."

"Manual labor is going to end in our lifetime, and in this video you can see how close we really are. It's a huge societal issue with jobs, but it's going to be a huge lift in terms of efficiency of companies that nobody expected."

Boston Dynamics - the robotics firm owned by Google - has created a humanoid that is able to withstand all manner of bullying and still achieve its task.

Researchers push, kick and tease the remarkable new Atlas robot, which is an upgrade of models we've seen from the firm previously.

Despite the distractions, Atlas continues with its task of picking up and moving boxes.

In one instance, a member of the Boston Dynamics team gives Atlas such a severe whack to its upper back that it falls over, face first on to the floor.

It's peculiar how there's always an emphasis of robots and drones etc, taking over the job of delivering as that is actually not by nature a very automated process once the item is out of the door due to all sorts of unpredictable daily occurrences.

I believe that shelf-stackers, fast-food workers and even teachers will lose their jobs to robots long before delivery postmen do simply because of the more predictable and controllable environment in their workplace.

Robot doing delivery is a fantasy....

Its hard enough now with all the c r a p.. expected to be delivered.....

What about the conduct code, when it runs out of power after a 6 hour delivery, for it to be nicked by someone and then sold on ebay the next day.....

Well it can fill my Employee Survey for me then I am sure they can cope with the abuse management give out to us better maybe they will terminate one of them!

I can't see Royal Mail forking out for those robots to replace postal workers. It will need serious AI and development to make it doable. If companies suddenly buy all the robots to replace manual workers, they will have to pay for maintenance, servicing, plus there will be massive increase of unemployable workers and less money for general public to spend. A Human always better as they will have know how and adaptability.

If pay drops low enough humans, not machines, will get the work.

Just think of all the redundant automatic car washes replaced by workers.

If their battery life is anything like a pda, it ain't gonna work. Thought that guy with the big stick was really mean, was he supposed to represent a manager? Half expected roboman to turn round and give him a left hook!
