A popular Pembrokeshire man has been laid to rest, after members of his family believed his ashes had been stolen.

Christopher John, was left devastated after his father's ashes were reported missing from the kitchen of his mother's home in Johnston just hours before they were due to be scattered at Tenby.

His father, William John John, was a popular local man who once worked as the resort's postman. He was also well-known as the steward of many clubs, including the Black Rabbit in Pembroke, the Conservative Club in Pembroke Dock and the Balfour in Haverfordwest.

He left behind three children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren when he died last October.

"It's just devastating," said Christopher after he'd heard the ashes were missing last month.

"My dad's twin sister passed away a couple of weeks ago so this is just another awful thing. It's such a shock. It's terrible for everyone concerned.

"We can't lay him to rest until we've scattered his ashes."

Christopher said that several people had got in touch, via a relative, after articles appeared in last month's Western Telegraph and Milford Mercury to say the ashes were missing.

They were eventually found and scattered on the beach at Tenby on Mr John's birthday last week.

"I just wanted to thank people who got in touch after the original reports," said Christopher.

"A lot of people who knew my father would want to know he has now been laid to rest."
