Delve into Britain's proud postal history at Havering Museum

A pop-up exhibition celebrating Britain’s proud postal history has made its way to the borough.

Pop it in the Post: The World at the End of Your Street has opened at Havering Museum, exploring the tales of the individuals whose innovative ideas made mail accessible to all.

Families will learn more about the letter writing revolution, made possible by the introduction of the world’s first stamp in 1840, the Penny Black, and the UK’s first pillar boxes, in 1852.

Museum chairman Peter Stewart said: “Havering Museum is privileged to be given the unique opportunity of staging the incredible, and often amazing, history of the British postal service, dating as far back as 1733.

“Apart from highly visual display boards, there’s rare objects to see – including three historic Victorian pillar boxes, each with a fascinating story to tell, and the original writing desk that belonged to Anthony Trollope, the famous Victorian writer who invented pillar boxes and helped to develop the postal service in Britain.

“There’s even something for the kids – old uniforms to try on and a competition to give them the chance of winning their own pillar box.”

The British Postal Museum & Archive exhibition will run at the museum, High Street, Romford, until March 26.
